With thousands of removal companies operating across the UK, choosing one can feel like a gamble. It doesn't need to be. A few checks separate professional firms from the ones that cause problems.
Check credentials and trade bodies
Look for membership of a trade body such as the British Association of Removers (BAR). Members agree to a code of practice and offer an independent dispute resolution service if something goes wrong. Check membership on the trade body's own website rather than relying on a logo.
Make sure they're properly insured
A removal company should hold Goods in Transit insurance, covering your belongings while they're being moved, and Public Liability insurance, covering damage to property or people. Ask for proof, and check the limits match the value of what you own. See our removals insurance guide for the details.
Insist on a survey
Reputable companies offer a free in-home or video survey. Phone estimates often miss items and lead to extra charges on the day. A survey also lets the company spot access problems, like a tight staircase or a restricted street.
Get a detailed written quote
Your quote should itemise every part of the service: the number of crew and vans, packing, materials, dismantling, insurance, and any access or parking costs. It should state whether the price is fixed or hourly, and what the cancellation terms are.
Read reviews across more than one site
Look at Google reviews and at least one other independent source. A few bad reviews are normal; what matters is the pattern, and how the company responds to complaints.
Red flags to watch for
- Quoting without seeing your belongings
- Asking for a large deposit, especially in cash
- No physical business address or landline
- Prices far below every other quote
- Reluctance to put terms in writing
Compare before you commit
The best way to judge a removal company is alongside others. Request removal quotes from several local firms, then compare their prices, terms and how they answer your questions.
