The removal van has gone and the boxes are in. Here's what to do after moving house, split into what matters on the first day, in the first week and in the first month.

On the first day

  • Take and photograph meter readings, and send them to your suppliers.
  • Find the stopcock, fuse box and boiler controls, and check the heating works.
  • Test the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Check for any damage from the move and report it to your removal company in writing.

In the first week

  • Change the locks. You don't know how many keys are out there.
  • Register for council tax with your new local council, and tell the old one you've left.
  • Register to vote at your new address. Being on the electoral roll also helps your credit score.
  • Confirm your energy tariff. You'll be on the previous occupant's supplier and possibly an expensive default rate.
  • Check your broadband is live, or chase the installation.
  • Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first, then work room by room.

In the first month

  • Register with a local GP and dentist.
  • Update your address on your driving licence and vehicle log book with the DVLA. It's free, and required by law.
  • Work through anyone you haven't told yet, using our who to notify when you move list.
  • Find out your bin collection days and recycling rules.
  • Recycle your boxes, or pass them on to someone else who's moving.
  • Introduce yourself to the neighbours.

Leave a review

If your removal company did a good job, leave them a review. It helps other people choose. If you're helping a friend or family member plan their move next, point them to our guide to comparing removal quotes.
