Book too late and the best removal companies are already taken. Book too early and your completion date may move. Here's how to get the timing right.

How far in advance to book

  • Get removal quotes: six to eight weeks before your expected move date.
  • Book your removal company: four to six weeks ahead for most moves.
  • Peak season moves: eight weeks or more if you're moving in summer, at month end or on a Friday.

Getting quotes early doesn't commit you to anything, and it gives you time to arrange surveys and compare properly.

The cheapest days to move

Midweek is usually cheapest. Fridays are the most popular day for completions, so removal companies are in high demand and less likely to discount. Weekends can also cost more. If you have any flexibility, ask each company how much difference the day makes.

The cheapest times of year

Late spring and summer are the busiest season, when families move during school holidays. Autumn and winter, January to March in particular, tend to be quieter, with more availability and sometimes better prices. Avoid the days around Christmas and bank holidays when crews are limited.

Avoid month end if you can

Many tenancies and completions fall at the end of the month, so the last few working days are busy. A mid-month move gives you more choice of removal companies.

What if your completion date isn't fixed?

If you're buying or selling in a chain, your date may not be confirmed until exchange, which can be just days before completion. In that case:

  • Get your removal quotes early and pick your preferred company.
  • Tell them your provisional date and ask how much notice they need.
  • Check their deposit and cancellation terms before you pay anything.
  • Ask what happens if completion is delayed on the day, and whether waiting time is charged.

Start with quotes

Request free removal quotes as soon as you have a rough date. You'll know your options, and you'll be ready to book the moment your date is confirmed.
