London is the busiest moving market in the UK, and moving there brings a few challenges you won't meet elsewhere. Narrow streets, parking restrictions and flats on upper floors all affect how long a move takes and what it costs.

What does a removal to London cost?

London removals usually cost more than the UK average, because of traffic, parking and access. As a rough guide, a one-bed flat move within London might cost £400 to £700, and a three-bed house £1,000 to £1,600. Moving into London from elsewhere in the UK adds distance costs on top. Our London removals page has local prices, and the UK removal costs guide explains what drives them.

Parking and access

  • Parking suspensions: most London boroughs let you suspend a parking bay for moving day. Apply to the borough council well in advance, as they often need around two weeks' notice.
  • Red routes: stopping is restricted on red routes. Check both addresses and tell your removal company.
  • Flats: many London flats are up several flights of stairs with no lift, or have a lift too small for furniture. Mention this when you get quotes.
  • Charges: central London has the Congestion Charge, and the Ultra Low Emission Zone covers all London boroughs. Some removal companies include these in the price; ask.

Choosing where to live

London's 32 boroughs vary widely in rents, house prices, council tax and commute times. Before you commit, think about:

  • Your commute: check journey times on the Tube, Overground, Elizabeth line or buses at rush hour.
  • Council tax, which is set by each borough and differs significantly.
  • Schools, if you have children, and their admission areas.
  • Outdoor space: parks, gardens and balconies are at a premium.

Renting in London

Most people moving to London rent first. Good properties go quickly, so have your documents ready: ID, proof of income, references and your deposit. Landlords in England must check your right to rent. Furnished flats are common, which can make your move much smaller. A man and van may be enough; see man and van vs a removal company.

Plan ahead

London removal companies get booked up quickly at weekends and month end. Get London removal quotes as soon as you have a date, and tell each company about parking and stairs so the quotes are accurate.
