Moving to the UK from another country takes more planning than a domestic move. Your belongings may spend weeks at sea, there's customs paperwork, and a list of things to set up once you land. Here's an overview to get you started.
Check your visa first
Unless you're a British or Irish citizen, or already have settled status, you'll need the right visa or immigration status to live in the UK. The rules change, so check the official guidance on GOV.UK before making plans or booking an international removal.
Shipping your belongings
International removal companies usually offer three options:
- Full container load: a 20ft or 40ft container just for you. Fastest and most secure for a whole household.
- Groupage or shared container: your goods share a container with others. Cheaper, but slower.
- Air freight: expensive, but quick. Useful for a few essential boxes to tide you over.
Sea freight can take several weeks depending on where you're moving from, so plan to live with a few suitcases for a while. Get quotes from international removal specialists who handle packing, export paperwork and delivery to your UK address.
Customs and Transfer of Residence relief
If you're moving your main home to the UK, you may be able to bring your personal belongings in without paying import duty or VAT under Transfer of Residence relief. There are conditions, including how long you've lived abroad and how long you've owned the items, and you'll normally need to apply to HMRC before your goods arrive. Your international removal company should help with the forms.
When you arrive
- Somewhere to live: most newcomers rent first. In England, landlords must check your right to rent.
- Bank account: you'll usually need ID and proof of address. Some app-based banks are easier to open quickly.
- National Insurance number: you need one to work. Many visa holders already have one printed on their documents.
- GP: register with a local GP surgery as soon as you have an address.
- Council tax: register with your local council once you move in.
- Driving: whether you can exchange your licence depends on the country that issued it. Check with the DVLA.
Moving within the UK after you land
Many people rent short-term first, then move again once they know the area. When you do, compare UK removal quotes for your next move, and see our area guides for local costs and tips.
